TULAMBEN DIVE SITES, BALI

Discover the Best Dive Sites in Tulamben – From the Legendary USAT Liberty Wreck to Macro Muck Diving

EXPLORE ONE OF BALI'S MOST FAMOUS SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS

Tulamben, Bali is one of Indonesia's most famous scuba diving destinations, located on the northeast coast of Bali in Karangasem. The area is best known for the legendary USAT Liberty Shipwreck, but Tulamben offers far more than one wreck.

From shallow coral gardens and dramatic underwater walls to black-sand muck diving and fascinating macro creatures, Tulamben diving offers an incredible variety of underwater experiences.

Many of the main sites are accessible by shore entry, making Tulamben particularly convenient for divers and underwater photographers.

TULAMBEN DIVE SITES

USAT LIBERTY WRECK

The USAT Liberty Wreck is the most famous dive site in Tulamben and one of the most iconic wreck dives in Bali.

The approximately 120-meter-long US Army cargo ship rests just offshore on the black-sand coast of Tulamben. After being torpedoed during World War II and later displaced by the 1963 Mount Agung eruption, the wreck became an artificial reef covered with corals and marine life.

Divers can explore different sections of the wreck while looking for bumphead parrotfish, trevally, barracuda, moray eels, turtles, nudibranchs, scorpionfish and countless reef fish.

The shallow sections are accessible to newer certified divers, while deeper areas offer more opportunities for experienced divers.

USAT Liberty Wreck is a must-dive for anyone searching for the best wreck diving in Bali.

BALI'S LEGENDARY WORLD WAR II SHIPWRECK

Depth: Approximately 3–30 m
Type: Wreck / Reef / Shore Dive
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Best for: Wreck diving, marine life, underwater photography, night diving

TULAMBEN CORAL GARDEN

Located between the Liberty Wreck and Drop Off, Tulamben Coral Garden is a colorful shallow reef packed with marine life.

The relatively shallow profile makes Coral Garden an excellent choice for relaxed scuba diving, photography and training dives. The site is known for schooling reef fish, trevallies, snappers and sweetlips, while macro photographers can search for creatures such as ghost pipefish, leaf scorpionfish, ribbon eels and nudibranchs.

With its easy shore access and fascinating marine life, Coral Garden is one of the most popular Tulamben dive sites for underwater photography.

COLORFUL CORAL REEFS & INCREDIBLE MACRO MARINE LIFE

Depth: Approximately 3–15 m
Type: Reef / Shore Dive
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Best for: Macro photography, beginners, marine life

TULAMBEN DROP OFF

A DRAMATIC UNDERWATER WALL IN EAST BALI

Depth: Starting around 3–5 m and descending much deeper
Type: Wall / Reef / Shore Dive
Level: Beginner to Advanced, depending on depth
Best for: Wall diving, wide-angle photography, marine life

The Tulamben Drop Off, also known as the Tulamben Wall, is one of the area's most spectacular underwater landscapes.

The wall begins in shallow water and drops dramatically into the deep blue. PADI describes the wall as extending from around 3 meters to more than 80 meters, although recreational dives remain within appropriate certification limits.

The reef is covered with corals, sponges and sea fans, creating excellent opportunities for wide-angle photography.

Divers may encounter trevally, angelfish, triggerfish, bumphead parrotfish, barracuda, turtles and reef sharks.

SERAYA SECRETS

DEEP REEF DIVING & DRAMATIC UNDERWATER SCENERY

Depth: Approximately 3–35 m

Type: Muck / Black Sand / Shore

DiveLevel: Beginner to Advanced

Best for: Macro photography and rare critters

If you love macro diving, Seraya Secrets should be high on your Bali diving list.

Located southeast of Tulamben, this black-sand dive site is famous for its unusual and sometimes rare marine life. The sandy volcanic bottom provides excellent camouflage for small creatures that can be difficult to find without an experienced dive guide.

Seraya Secrets is an excellent choice for underwater photographers searching for rare macro subjects in Bali.

KUBU REEF

QUIET CORAL REEFS AWAY FROM THE CROWDS

Depth: Varies depending on the route
Type: Reef / Black Sand / Shore Dive
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Best for: Marine life, macro photography, relaxed diving

Kubu is located north of the main Tulamben dive area and offers another excellent option for divers looking for colorful reef scenery and marine life.

The site combines volcanic black sand with coral formations and reef habitat. It can provide a quieter alternative to the busier Liberty Wreck area.

Kubu is particularly interesting for divers who enjoy slow-paced marine-life exploration and underwater photography.

KUBU BOGA WRECK

EXPLORE ANOTHER WRECK NEAR TULAMBEN

Depth: Approximately 15–30+ m
Type: Wreck / Reef
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Best for: Wreck diving and underwater photography

The Boga Wreck, also known as the Kubu Wreck, provides another wreck-diving experience near Tulamben.

The decommissioned vessel was intentionally sunk and has gradually become an artificial reef. The wreck offers a different atmosphere from the much larger Liberty Wreck, with marine life increasingly colonizing its structure.

The Boga Wreck is an excellent option for divers who want to experience more than one wreck while diving in the Tulamben area.

BATU NITI

Batu Niti is one of the deeper dive options around the Tulamben area.

The underwater landscape features sloping reef and deeper structures where experienced divers can explore larger coral formations and deeper marine habitats.

Because parts of the site can exceed recreational depth limits, the dive should be planned according to certification, experience, conditions and gas management.

For divers looking for something beyond the classic Liberty–Coral Garden combination, Batu Niti can add another dimension to a Tulamben diving trip.

DEEP REEF DIVING & DRAMATIC UNDERWATER SCENERY

Depth: Can extend beyond recreational depths
Type: Deep Reef / Wall
Level: Advanced / Experienced Divers
Best for: Deep diving, experienced divers, underwater photography

BATU KELEBIT

Batu Kelebit is part of the wider Tulamben diving area and is generally accessed as a boat dive.

The site offers a different underwater environment from the shallow shore dives around the Liberty Wreck, with rocky formations and deeper reef terrain.

Because conditions and currents can vary, Batu Kelebit is better suited to divers with appropriate experience and should be assessed by the local dive guide before entering the water.
